Rendering of Finished Project

Hope House Capital Campaign

We plan to move from our existing building on Halley street to a newly renovated East Campus Community Center.

An opportunity presented itself to successfully reach two of three of our program goals that have existed since the early 90’s. Until recently, Child & Family Services has been searching unsuccessfully for a site to either build or renovate a new Hope House girls treatment facility, as the current facility has many deficiencies. Additionally, we desired to create a smaller abuse/neglect treatment program for a population of girls that has a different set of needs from our juvenile justice girl population.

Many abuse/neglect referrals go unmet because of our lack of capacity to take them and their special treatment needs. Finally, more than half of all our girls graduating from the program have no family to return home to and could use a program designed to help them mature as they live independently. The girls themselves often state how they would like to be able to remain in the Hope House program and go on to college or live independently.

There is a three phase plan to:
(Phase 1) Renovate a new 15 bed girls Hope House Juvenile Justice (JJ) group home;
(Phase 2) Create a smaller 8 bed Hope House JJ Abuse/Neglect unit;
(Phase 3) Develop a Hope House Independent Living program for girls with nowhere to go after graduating the program.

We currently have the opportunity to complete both Phase 1 and Phase 2 at the same time with the donation of a section of the Alpena Community College East Campus (former Catholic High School) classrooms adjacent to an existing youth center (former gymnasium).

We have worked collaboratively with the local community college and Word of Life Church for over a year to secure this donated building and property valued at $300,000. The renovation of this building would rectify the deficiencies of our existing Hope House program and allow us to expand and create a smaller Abuse/Neglect wing designed to meet the special needs of that population. This is a green project to the extent that we can renovate the existing site. We have LEED certified consultants assisting us with the project and we are seriously considering geothermal for the site.
